A very early start at Gatwick, which was very busy, but we were quickly checked in and through security and in no time at all to board our direct flight to Ljubljana. Just 2 hours later we arrived and within minutes we were through passport control, bags collected and were whisked away to our first stop of the day.
Postojna Caves, is one of the largest cave systems in Europe. We boarded a mini train that took us deep into the caves taking 10 minutes to arrive at our starting point for our guided walk. The caves are spectacular, a true wonder of nature and very worth the visit. You do need to be able to manage steep slopes to be able to enjoy the full guided tour, although you can still enjoy the mini train ride very easily. After the caves, we visited Predjama Castle, a beautiful castle set back into the caves, and you can visit the two together on one ticket.
We then headed to our hotel for the night in Portoroz a lovely town on the Adriatic Coast. The following morning, we had a guided walking tour of nearby Piran, a wonderful Venetian-walled town steeped in history. With its pretty Harbour and picturesque squares, it’s a perfect place to while away the day with a coffee and watch the world go by!
We then headed off to our next stop for the night in Bohinj. On route, we stopped off at Vipava Valley for Wine Tasting and Lunch. The wine in Slovenia came as a surprise as before my visit I was not aware they made wine and it really is very good!
Bohinj can only be described as breathtaking. A beautiful, unspoilt lakeside town with easy access to the cable car up to Mt Vogel. Perfect for hikers, mountain bikers etc in the Summer and Autumn months and a great small family Ski Resort in the winter.
After a boat ride on the lake and a trip up Mt Vogel on the Cable car to take in the stunning view, we headed off to Lake Bled to visit Bled Castle and the famous Island on the Lake.
Lake Bled is much busier than Bohinj but is just as you see it in the photos. A boat trip out to the Island is a must, and if you visit the Church on the Island you can ring the bell 3 times and make your Wish.
We then headed to the Capital Ljubljana for our final night in Slovenia. After checking in to our City Hotel we headed to have Dinner at Jezersek, Ljubljana Castle which was a fantastic place to have our final Dinner together. The food, like everywhere in Slovenia was of a very high standard with everything locally sourced and produced, something the Slovenians are very proud of.
Our final morning was spent exploring the vibrant, cosmopolitan capital. We had a guided walking tour taking us through the Food Markets where every Friday during the summer months, up to the end of October, the local restaurants have stalls. This is a fantastic place to explore and try all the local foods. Sadly, it was then time to collect our cases and head for the Airport for our flight home.
Slovenia is in a perfect location, nestled between the Alps and the Adriatic. In just one day you can be walking in the Alps and swimming in the warm Sea. With its Mountains, Lakes and Rivers it’s a perfect destination for Hikers, Skiers and Cyclists. Whilst the Medieval Churches, Picturesque Towns and stunning hilltop Castles are perfect for those wanting to take in Slovenia's History and sights.
I know I can't wait to go back.
