Whale Watching in Boston

Boston whale watching

13th December 2016: On my recent trip to Boston, there was so much to see and do, but the highlight for me has to be my whale watching experience. Getting up close to these fascinating creatures is something I’ll never forget, so here’s why you should consider a whale-watching trip in Boston.

Views

While the main reason to take a whale watching cruise is to spot whales, there are also other stunning views which make the journey all the more wonderful. As we sailed out of Boston on a beautiful crisp day, I looked back to see the most beautiful view of the Boston skyline. Cruising out over the water, it was amazing to see Boston from a completely different angle, as we enjoyed the sea breeze.

Catamarans

We travelled on the Aurora catamaran, which was comfortable with indoor and outdoor seating and viewing areas. It also included a snack bar, and as we hit open water, a warm coffee was definitely welcome!

All the catamarans always have a New England Aquarium naturalist on board, to share their knowledge and answer any questions we had. Interestingly the naturalists on board could even identify and name each whale, which I found fascinating. They do this by logging their markings on their tails and the skin pigmentation. This really added to the experience, because it gave us an insight into how these amazing animals live and also a name to go with it.

Wildlife

The main appeal for a whale watching cruise is of course, to see the whales, and what a sight that is. As we approached the area, noticeably there were a lot of birds, and as the trip went on we, realised that this heralded an appearance of the whales. Wow when they did surface what an amazing sight!

I was expecting to see maybe a couple of whales on the trip we were lucky enough to see 20+, one even came right up to the boat, and I felt truly privileged to see this wonderful animal up close. The whales we saw were Humpbacks and the best time to see whales are between March and November.

All too soon our trip was coming to an end as we headed back to Boston. I reflected on what had been an amazing trip and how lucky I had been to see so many of these incredible animals. This trip thoroughly exceeded all my expectations and no it’s not crossed off my bucket list, I would do this trip again and again.
