My ‘Danube Dreams’ Cruise with Avalon Waterways
Well, I’ve officially been spoiled rotten. Three nights on Avalon Waterways’ Danube Dreams (Eastbound), and now regular life seems a little dull in comparison! Gliding down the Danube, with Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest on my itinerary. I had never been to any of these destinations, so I do feel very lucky to have experienced such culture and beauty.
The Ship: A Floating Elegant Hotel - Unpack once...
I don’t even know where to start, the ship itself is stunning, such elegance with panoramic windows throughout. I was aboard the Avalon Impression ship and stayed in a Panorama Suite Cabin. With L'Occitane bath products, bathrobes, slippers, a pillow menu (I went for firm) and a wall to wall panoramic window, which opened so you could enjoy fresh air and views, I was not disappointed. I was on a full board basis, from morning to night, there was always something delicious on offer: breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks (wine, beer and soft drinks) with meals, and even a pre-dinner 'Happy Hour,' where you can sip on an array of cocktails.
Food Glorious Food!
Now, brace yourselves: I’m about to talk food, which I could talk about all day long. Breakfast what a feast, complete with every type of breakfast cuisine you could think of. Continental, cooked, fresh omelette - made to order or cereal and fruit - you name it, they have it. One day I even opted for breakfast in the cabin (because honestly, how could I not.) Lunch and dinner were even more of a treat. Avalon Fresh is the health-forward menu, featuring the freshest ingredients, both lunch and dinner, that are creative and delicious, might I add. Every day at lunch they had a “local specialty” such as Hungarian sausages and roasted pork belly crackling - I went back for seconds on both days.
Dinner was like an art form. Each evening, we were greeted with an elaborate menu. Breads & dips on the table, starter, followed by soup, main course and of course endings (pudding). Every evening I found it almost impossible to choose. My personal highlights were the lobster tail, the beef tenderloin, and the trilogy of salmon, served on our gala/farewell evening. Wine with the meals changed every day, which I loved, The Austrian rose, served on the first evening was delicious. Oh... Did I mention the Club Lounge snacks? 24-hour access to coffee, tea, juices, and an awesome filter water machine with choices of flavours - I loved the green tea, ginseng and moringa.
The Crew: Masters of Hospitality
I’ve got to give a shout out to the incredible crew and every staff member onboard. The waiters really did go out of their way to make sure we were always happy, had everything we needed, plus our wine was topped at dinner before we even had to ask. The crew are always smiling, nothing ever felt too much, the staff really did go above and beyond.
So, What to Wear?
For those wondering, the vibe on a river cruise is a lot more relaxed than an ocean cruise. Smart-casual during the day and evening, or a slightly dressier outfit for dinner, if of course you want to glam up (I personally did.) Comfortable walking shoes are a must for the excursions, though.
Excursions: Vienna, Bratislava & Budapest
So, let's talk about our excursions and adventures whilst in these three glorious cities. We started in Vienna, I had time to explore my gorgeous cabin, have some lunch, before I hit the city. Vienna has a unique blend of history, culture, and modern charm. Naturally, we had to treat ourselves to a coffee and cake (Vienna demands it). After a lovely dinner back on the ship, a large group went on an optional excursion to a Classical Music Concert. I'm so glad we opted to go, the talent on the stage was just spectacular. A truly magical experience I won’t forget.
We sailed overnight to Bratislava. So, as I awoke, I was in a brand new city with lots more to explore. There are different excursions to choose from, before you board, obviously depending on what you’d like to see and how active you wish to be. Options can however be changed on board (subject to availability). I went for the 'Classic' choice (slower paced) - A guided city walk, with a wonderful, very funny guide, we saw the quaint streets of Old Town, Town Hall, and St. Martin’s Cathedral. There is so much history, culture and architecture to see, a beautiful blend of medieval, baroque and modern architecture. Plus, we got to taste a lovely Slovakian wine and a local nibble.
Finally, Budapest's 'Classic' guided tour, was around the city, including Heroes’ Square and other iconic spots. Personally when the excursions finished on both days, I opted to explore more. Budapest is such a captivating city, I did a lot of walking, I couldn't help wanting to see as much as possible. Whilst there, due to having a later flight on the last day, I got to see the stunning landmarks: Parliament Building, Buda Castle and St. Stephen’s Basilica. The Chain Bridge connects the hilly side of Buda and the lively, flat side of Pest - both worth a visit!
