2nd June 2017: On an escorted trip with Kirker Holidays, Claire, from our Wells branch, discovered just how sensational Sicily can be. Awash with history and plenty of natural wonders to explore, Sicily is home to beautiful buildings and plenty of culture...
I was guided by Diana, daughter of the Blue Guide Sicily author Ellen Grady, and discovered locations which made a lasting impression on me on this stunning island. It's an island with so much to offer and a fascinating history, and I will definitely be returning to the stunning island of Sicily.
Palermo
The bustling city of Palermo is packed with locals out for a mid-day stroll and street entertainers mesmerising the crowds with their acts. After taking a walk along the grand Via Roma awash with the hubbub of shops and restaurants, we took time to admire the Teatro Massimo, a spectacular opera house, dedicated to King Victor Emanuel II; the biggest opera house in Italy and the third largest opera house in Europe. From here, I strongly recommend you take the time to marvel at the beautiful Palatine Chapel. Adorned with dazzling mosaics, religious imagery and impressive arches this royal chapel of the Norman kings of Sicily is truly outstanding.
Monreale
This quaint, hillside town will stick in my mind for years to come. Its town square, filled with bars and restaurants provided the perfect setting to relax and watch the world go by. This was topped by some of the most delightful food, I highly recommend dining at a local restaurant. I chose a pizza place which stone-baked its pizzas using a traditional cob oven. To top it off the restaurant owner was a real character who loved to get involved, taking many a cheeky selfie with customers. Arguably, one of the greatest examples of Norman architecture is located here, The Cathedral of Monreale.
Agrigento
The well-preserved, ancient Greek archaeological site of The Valley of the Temples is situated just outside of the beautiful city of Agrigento. Largely regarded as one of the most outstanding examples of Greater Greek art and architecture, the area was UNESCO listed in 1997. We had lunch at a nearby olive oil farm which featured a wealth of interesting activities on offer, including a real, rustic Italian cooking experience.
Taormina
With hotels here offering stunning views over the landscape of Taormina and adjacent Mt Etna, your view here is often truly outstanding. During my time here, snow was sprinkled across the top of the infamous Mt Etna and as the sun came up, the sky was awash with a beautiful dusty pink colour – truly magnificent! The town of Taormina itself, has a wealth of streets and side streets to get lost amongst. With plenty of places to stop for a glass of wine, you could spend all day taking everything in or simply watch the world go by. A definite must see in this town is the incredible Greco-Roman Theatre/Ancient Theatre of Taormina. Estimated to have been built in 3BC, the theatre is a true spectacle and won’t be forgotten in a hurry!
Siracusa
The island of Ortygia is brimming with incredible history. The old part of the city boasts amazing architecture with the Piazza del Duomo and the cathedral square standing out as truly spectacular. During my time here, I was able to experience the city’s local market where traders entice you to sample their delicacies. In traditional Sicilian style I tried the local cheese, olives and salami, all of which, in my opinion, cannot be rivalled.
My Recommendations
I loved my time on the sensational island of Sicily and I very much look forward to exploring more of this extraordinary place. If you’re thinking of taking a trip here, I’d highly recommend travelling towards the start of the season, March, April and early May as the sights are less crowded and the weather isn’t too hot. Similarly October, towards the end of the season, would also provide an ideal time to travel here. To get the most out of your trip, I’d recommend hiring a car so you can enjoy everything this spectacular island has to offer at your own pace.
