21st April 2016: I’ve been to Jamaica six times now, so it’s safe to say I love it. In Jamaica, everything you would expect to find is there, but what else can it offer for those looking to do more than just laze about in this sunshine paradise? The answer is much more.
Rose Hall
The island has its fair share of history, including age-old mansions and 18th-century plantations. Rose Hall in Montego Bay is case in point. This magnificent Great House contains a wonderful collection of furnishings and décor, reflecting the 18th century colonial style perfectly. But the Great House is more than just a stunning architectural gem, it also has the history of an engaging novel and is said to be haunted by the ghost of a White Witch. With both day and night tours available, I visited the Mansion twice. Both tours give you a fascinating look into the past of this house, but the evening tour was fantastic, as it created more of a scary atmosphere.
Natural Wonders
While we are all aware of the stunning white sand beaches, fringed with palm trees and sparking waters, Jamaica also has a number of other natural wonders. With hidden waterfalls, banana plantations, lush tropical rainforests and enormous mountains, there is plenty of beauty to discover on this island. For those who like to hike, the Blue Mountains should definitely be on top of your list, allowing you to look at the world through completely new eyes.
Night Life
The main resorts on the island are Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios and with a transfer of only 10 minutes, my choice was Montego Bay. In these lively towns, there are luxury beachfront hotels that sit shoulder-to-shoulder with reggae bars, bric-a-brac huts and plenty of nightclubs. With their jerk chicken and Bob Marley beats, it’s the perfect atmosphere to relax and unwind as you mingle with the friendly locals.
Climate
Jamaica enjoys hot temperatures all year round, with the summer months topping 30 degrees. Winter is a bit cooler but can still reach 28 degrees and its the driest time to visit, with most of the island's rain falling in summer and autumn. Hurricane season follows during June to November, but severe storms are pretty rare.
With a climate like this, Jamaica is still perfect for those who really do just want to soak up the sunshine on a stunning beach, making it one of those places with something for everyone. So, whether you're up for an adventure, or simply want some rest and relaxation in paradise, Jamaica can offer you all this and more.
