I was lucky enough to attend the CLIA river cruise conference in the ‘must see’ city of Budapest recently. If you like exploring on foot or via tram, feeling very safe and looked after, learning about the history behind a city, or just being in awe of architecture, then Budapest is a must to visit.
I was very pleased to be spending the night on board the Scenic Opal. Scenic describe their ships as ‘Ultra-luxury Spaceships'. This is down to the size to people ratio on the ship and the variety of different areas on the ship. One hundred and thirty-five meters, one hundred and sixty-three guests, fifty-five crew members with eighty-two suites. I could write all day about how luxurious this ship is. There’s even a pillow menu, along with a shoeshine and valet service.
As I walked on board the ship, we were greeted with friendly faces, a bright opulent entrance room and a much-appreciated glass of fizz. An immediate feeling of a warm welcome.
In time, we started the check in process to get our room keys. I was really pleased with how quick and effective their check in process was, having been through a long day of travelling. With my key in hand, I got to my allocated cabin, located on the middle deck (Sapphire). It was lovely to be on a small ship where you didn't walk for what feels like miles to your room. I was there within thirty seconds.
The room was a balcony suite, which was a perfect mix of luxury and comfort. From the comfortable slumber beds and bedding to the extra special touches such as personal butler service. Yes – he will bring you food for a midnight snack, trust me! The amenities and features with these cabins are endless (do come in store and I will happily rave about them).
Food and wine – it's a big part of our holidays isn't it. And this ship didn't disappoint on either. From staff topping your glass up (whether with tea, coffee, soft drinks or a wine), to the food being melt in your mouth. Now I am a meat eater, and I had a gorgeous steak. I will remember it. Like butter. The catering team will also cater to all food and dietary requirements, so it is good for all foodies. I even tried French toast for the first time, and now I am on the lookout for it everywhere. A touch I liked was how they give back to the local cities, they sail through, by using fresh and local ingredients from the European waterways. Sustainability is on most people's minds right now, so I liked this practice Scenic does.
Now, the thought did cross my mind, that given the ultra-lux title that Scenic carries so well, I was optimistic about the evening entertainment. We had a band on ship that explored a range of music tastes, so they really did cater to everyone’s preferences. If you wanted to get up and shake your hips, you could. This was all held in the Panorama Lounge and Bar in the heart of the ship. It was a lovely space to be in. Very welcoming, very warm, but with a touch of class running throughout.
The weather in Budapest was lovely, couldn't be faulted. So, what to do? If you don't fancy taking part in some of the unforgettable excursions that have been crafted around the destination, you can pull up a pew on the sun deck (or river view terrace) and enjoy the 360-degree view. Or, if you feel the need to burn off the food and wine you indulged in the night before, head to the wellness area where you can visit the gym, spa or even the salt therapy lounge. I was only on the Scenic Opel for a short amount of time, but I enjoyed every second I was on there. I give it the Miles Morgan Travel seal of approval!
