Hi, Alison here from Miles Morgan Travel in Portishead. I have just returned from an amazing river cruise on the Danube with APT Travelmarvel!! This was the first river cruise I have ever been on, and I have to say it exceeded expectations!
I was met at the airport by an APT guide, who took me and the others to the coach to take me to the ship. The ship was beautiful, very easy to board, and so welcoming. I was sailing on board Travelmarvel Vega and it was like walking onto a floating 5-star Hotel! Everything was spotless and instantly made you feel relaxed! Being greeted with a glass of prosecco was a nice added touch; there is no better way is there to start your holiday!
The cabin I stayed in was a french balcony cabin, where the top half of the window could be opened or closed! After arriving at my cabin I had my suitcase waiting for me. I then took some time to unpack and made the most of this amazing room! With a breath of fresh air each day and stunning views, I would recommend a french balcony to anyone.
Evening dinner was a choice of four courses and local wines recommended by the waiters to complement each food choice. All I can say about the food is wow! Exceptional flavours. We had a duet of Violinists playing local music while we ate.
After a buffet breakfast the next morning, we headed on our tour of Budapest! Budapest is split into two, the old part Buda and the new town Pest. We went to the new part first, visiting places like Heroes’ Square, which played an important part in Hungarian history and is noted for its iconic Millennium Monument. The expert guide was extremely knowledgeable and made it very interesting.
We next went over to the other side, which is known as Buda. We went to the famous castle district and had a lovely walking tour of the castle with amazing views over the Danube. I couldn’t go to Hungary without tasting the famous Hungarian strudel and it didn’t disappoint! Strudel and a coffee to warm up in the cold!
Our next destination was Vienna. What was interesting was the lovely scenery as you sail along the river and go through locks, an experience not to miss! I stood at the front of the ship to watch, the process only took around half an hour. Vienna was a beautiful city and a must-visit. Our first stop on our tour was Hofburg Palace and the iconic St. Stephen’s Cathedral. As it was Christmas, we had some free time to wander around the traditional Christmas markets, a must-do this time of the year.
Back to the ship for dinner and live entertainment in the lounge bar after. We all took part in a music quiz, great fun! On our last morning, we had a visit to Schönbrunn Palace and gardens. I have to admit this was my favourite place to visit! The history of the famous Habsburg rulers and where Marie Antoinette was born was absolutely fascinating!
I learnt so much history on this trip thanks to the local guides, they knew all about the history and had a good sense of humour. I now feel I want everyone to experience what I did! If you want to know more please pop in to see me and have a chat!
