Norwegian White Christmas

Overview

Norwegian White Christmas

Immerse yourself in the beautiful scenes and natural wonders of wintertime Norway – at a time of year with fewer tourists around – and experience magical Christmas and New Year celebrations on board your smaller ship and during time ashore, for a festive adventure you will remember forever. Visit the stylish city of Stavanger, perfect for picking-up last minute gifts for your friends and loved ones accompanying you on your journey, before enjoying a memorable Christmas at sea. As Black Watch sails on towards Arctic Norway, you’ll enjoy a day of traditional food, fun and festivity, all while friendly, attentive staff take care of everything for you. Boxing Day will be very special, calling at Alta – one of the best places to see the extraordinary Northern Lights – for an overnight stay. With luck on your side, you may get to witness Mother Nature’s multi-coloured light display dancing across the night sky. You could tour to the Sorrisniva Ice Hotel too, not just to marvel at its hand-crafted structures and sculptures, but also get ‘hands on’ and create your own Arctic art. To see the year out in style, there’s an unmissable opportunity to uncover a wonderland of wintery scenes on an exhilarating husky ride from Tromsø. Your Musher will even let you ‘take the reins’ and experience the thrill of guiding your team of dogs into the unspoilt wilderness. Black Watch also takes you to picturesque Narvik, overlooked by the magnificent, snow-capped peak of Narvikfjellet Mountain and surrounded by Arctic landscapes best seen from the town’s cable car, before your New Year’s Eve celebrations begin in Bergen. Perhaps join local revellers in the city centre in the evening and feel the excitement as the arrival of 2022 nears; then head back on board to watch a spectacular fireworks display as the clock strikes midnight – an incredible way to start the New Year.

Full Itinerary

Day 1: Southampton

Depart Southampton.

Day 2 - 3: At Sea

Day 4 - 5: Stavanger, Norway

Behind the bustle of the prosperous and cosmopolitan Stavanger of today lie 1,000 years of ancient seafaring tradition and history. This vibrant, exciting Norwegian city oozes charm and was awarded the prestigious title of ‘European Capital of Culture’ in 2008.

The city’s wealth and thriving oil industry has prompted its tag as Norway’s ‘Oil Capital’, but Stavanger has remained as charming as ever. The old town, Gamle Stavanger, has narrow winding streets and ancient wooden houses gathered round an historic fresh fish and vegetable market.

Day 6 - 7: At Sea for Christmas and Boxing Day

Day 8 - 9: Alta, Norway

As one of the best places on earth to witness the Northern Lights in winter, and experience the sensation of the Midnight Sun in summer, Alta is a truly magical destination. Originally inhabited by the indigenous Sami people, the area has a fascinating cultural history. Rock carvings in nearby Hjemmeluft are believed to date from around 4,200 to 500 BC. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the carvings on display in the Alta Museum are evidence of the existence of human activity in the far north during prehistoric times.

Alta needed rebuilding after World War II, so the buildings of this northern Norwegian port are relatively new; notable architecture includes the Northern Lights Cathedral.

Day 10: Tromsø, Norway

The island city of Tromsø is one of northern Norway’s true delights. Rich with neo-classical architecture, the city known as the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’ contains the largest number of wooden houses in Northern Norway, and its old world charm makes it a joy to explore.

A major cultural hub above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is famed as a viewing point for the colourful Northern Lights that often light up the night sky.

Day 11: Narvik, Norway

Founded in 1903, Narvik is a relatively new city but still offers a fascinating history. Located north of the Arctic Circle, the city's harbour is surprisingly ice-free, however, there are still a number of stunning Arctic sights to see, including the Narvikfjellet Mountain.

Although over 400km north of the Arctic Circle, Narvik’s harbour is ice-free and in use all year as a port for iron ore exports.

Day 12 - 13: Bergen, Norway

Seven hills and seven fjords frame Hanseatic Bergen, a city steeped in maritime heritage. Of Bergen’s many attractions, the 900-year-old UNESCO-listed Bryggen Wharf is a standout highlights. A delight to explore, the Bryggen's cobbled stairways are lined with traditional half-timbered buildings and climb away from the waterfront, leading to curious open spaces that are often overflowing with colourful flowers that perfume the air.

Bergen has a vibrant fish market and hosts one of Norway's biggest cultural events of the year, the Bergen International Festival.

Day 14 - 15: At Sea

Day 16: Southampton
