Facilities
- There’s a trio of pools here. Two have been given the infinity treatment, and one’s right on the beach – its sun terrace steps directly onto the sand. You’ll find a number of bars in and around the pool area, too. Smaller swimmers get their own pool in the kids’ club. At the spa, there’s a vitality pool and a chilled pool.
- You’ve got plenty of options at mealtimes – including an international buffet restaurant, an Indian à la carte, and a beachfront place that deals in seafood. Mauritian cuisine comes courtesy of an eatery housed in an 18th-century mansion that's part of the wider resort. An African restaurant puts on a weekly boma* – a traditional campfire, on which meat cuts and fresh fish are grilled.
- Live singers and bands take to the floor in the evenings. You’ll often sit down to performances of sega, which is the national music and dance of Mauritius. When it comes to watering holes, there are plenty to choose from, including the stylish Chill bar. It’s located in the resort’s beach club, and features white-on-white décor and atmospheric lighting.
- You can try things like tennis, volleyball and archery on land, and there’s windsurfing, snorkelling and water-skiing on the beach. You get unlimited green fees at the resort’s 18-hole championship golf course, as well. At the hotel-run kids’ club, smaller guests can join in with sports, circus activities and crab-hunting. Teens aren’t left out – they can sign up to tennis tournaments and horse-riding*.
- The huge spa* is one of the biggest in the Indian Ocean, and is styled like an African village. Treatment rooms and beauty parlours are set up in clay huts with thatched roofs, surrounded by lily ponds and well-tended gardens. There’s a giant fitness centre. It covers 3,500 square metres and is packed full of state-of-the-art equipment. You can relax with yoga and tai chi lessons in the gardens, too.

As we hopped out of our transfer and wandered inside the Waldorf Astoria I soon found Dubai hotels were easily rivalled here. Grand, bright and oozing luxury, the Waldorf is more palace than hotel.
