Housed in an 11th century building which was once the university’s law school, exposed wooden beams are reminders of its mediaeval past. The 35 bedrooms are all decorated with antique furniture from the family’s private collection and have comfortable beds and marble bathrooms; a few even have a small balcony facing the side of the basilica. An excellent breakfast is served in the Sala del Pozzo, which features a vaulted ceiling and a well from the early Middle Ages. Regular exhibitions by local artists in the public areas add a contemporary twist.
