Day 1: Southampton, England

Day 4: Bergen, Norway

Your approach to Bergen is absolutely beautiful, taking you past Svanøy Island and Jostedalsbreen glacier. In the city, which is listed as both a World Heritage City and a European City of Culture, you will find a host of fine museums, including the Hanseatic Museum, Bryggens Museum and Theta Museum giving insights into the history of both the city and Norway as a whole. For fantastic views of the city and surrounding fjords take the Fløibanen funicular, opened in 1918, to the 320 metre Fløyen, where you can enjoy an warming coffee and traditional snack in the café.

Day 5: Alesund, Norway

Spend a day in the beautiful city of Alesund, where the ubiquitous jugendstil architecture provides a truly unique urban adventure. Hike the 418 steps to the top of Aksla, for panoramic views of the town and the distant Sunnmøre Alps. Alternatively, visit a traditional Norwegian home and learn about local customs and daily life.

Day 7: Tromso

Visit Tromsø, the “Gateway to the Arctic”. The city has launched many an Arctic expedition and you can share in its adventurous spirit with a dog sledding excursion into the frozen wilds. 350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle and with little light pollution, Tromsø is also an ideal place for observing the incredible Northern Lights, so much so that the city holds a festival in honour of the natural phenomenon.

Day 8: Alta

Alta provides access to the Finnmark Plateau where you can overnight at the Holmen Husky Lodge. Sleep under the flickering Northern Lights in a lavvu tent and meet the huskys and their pups in the lodge kennels. The following day visit the Northern Lights Cathedral, in Alta. This stunning modernist structure of swirling steel and glass mirrors the fleeting movement of the Northern Lights while reflecting the ever-changing mood of the Arctic Circle.

Day 11: Kristiansund, Norway.

Berth in the cluster of four island that make up the fantastically colourful Kristiansund. The city is known both as “Opera Town” for its frequent operatic performances and prestigious company and as the “Capital of Clipfish”, as it was once a hub of the fish salting industry. You can vist a museum dedicated to the traditional process of fish salting on the docks or travel out of town on a tour that visits Bremnes, the 14th-century Kvernes Stave Church and navigates the 8.5 kilometre long Atlantic Road. This precarious road that links Averøy to the mainland is simultaneously described as the most beautiful road journey in the world and “Norway’s engineering feat of the century”.

Day 14: Stavanger, Norway

Welcome to Stavanger, the ‘Oil Capital of Norway’. In town you can explore the old centre of white wooden homes, famed as the best preserved wooden settlement in Europe, or seek out the 900-year-old cathedral, whose first bishop was a Benedictine monk from Winchester. You could also travel back in time on the reconstruction of the Norwegian Mayflower, Restauration, setting the sails and climbing the rigging for a birds-eye view of the fjord.
