Overview

American Waterways & Canada in the Fall with Joan

Offering a rare chance to revel in the seasonal splendour of scenic waterways and gorgeous coastlines in the US and Canada on board Balmoral, and explore remarkable cities too, this exhilarating North American adventure makes for an unmissable ocean cruise experience.

Many unforgettable sights will punctuate the exploration of North America’s incredible East Coast. Heading to New York, sail the Cape Cod Canal, passing through autumn-coloured woodland and under impressive bridges, before waking to the sight of the iconic Statue of Liberty. Two days in the ‘Big Apple’ affords ample time to see the skyscrapers, shop at world-renowned stores, visit Broadway, Times Square, Central Park and more, before Balmoral takes you beyond New York and along the Hudson River Show less– only accessible to smaller ships – for views of riverbanks resplendent with brown and red fall foliage. Beautiful autumnal scenes will be revealed as glide along the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal to Baltimore, gateway to Washington DC. Once ashore, tour from Baltimore to the US capital and you can take your pick of must-visit sites, such as the White House and Lincoln Memorial.

Elsewhere in the US, perhaps discover the quaint cobbled streets, shops and microbreweries of the Old Port in Portland; and admire the appealing fusion of hi-tech towers and classic Georgian architecture in Boston, home of the famous Freedom Trail. North of the US border, enjoy a taste of Canada’s beautiful Eastern Seaboard, which comes to life in the fall. Visit St John’s, surrounded by stunning Newfoundland countryside and home to the historic Signal Hill; Sydney, perfectly placed for explorations of Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Highlands, the Bras d’Or Lakes and Fortress Louisbourg National Park; and the culture-rich cities of Halifax and Saint John. At each Canadian call, be fully immersed in the natural beauty, fresh air and welcoming atmosphere of this remarkable country. Finally, for contrasting experiences to those enjoyed in North America, Balmoral will take you to the sun-splashed Atlantic Ocean islands of Bermuda and São Miguel, for soothing warmth, inviting crystal-clear waters and glorious beaches.

Praised for its quality of life, Halifax is a proud, vibrant city that represents modern Canada.

The restored harbour district in Saint John reveals many insights into a fascinating heritage. An exciting twice-daily event is the phenomenon of the river's spectacular tidal bore at the famous Reversing Falls Rapids.

Day 14: Portland

Day 15: Boston

Boston is the largest city in New England and one of the most historic, influential and interesting in the United States. Attracting over 12 million visitors a year, Boston is renowned for its range of cultures, its vibrant atmosphere and its diverse, ever changing cityscape where tall skyscrapers and charming Georgian buildings stand proudly alongside each other on the banks of the iconic Charles River.

Day 16: Cruising Cape Cod Canal

Lined on both sides by pretty parks and beautiful woodland areas, there are plenty of sights to enjoy as you make your way along the canal, passing under a number of impressive bridges including the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge, Sagamore Bridge and the historic Bourne Bridge – voted America’s most beautiful steel bridge in 1934 by the American Institute of Steel Constructions.

Day 17: Cruising by Statue of Liberty, New York

Revel in the sight of New York’s Statue of Liberty, a US National Monument and one of the world’s most iconic, instantly-recognisable symbols of freedom and democracy. Sailing slowly by, in the comfort of your smaller-sized ship, you’ll be presented with unspoilt views of this legendary landmark, providing a simply unmissable photo opportunity.

Day 17 - 19: New York

New York City is one of the most important, influential and exciting cities on earth and though it may not be awash with palm-lined beaches and tropical islands, it is considered by many as one of the world’s must-visit holiday destinations, a truly one-of-a-kind, unique, vibrant, cosmopolitan and diverse city with attractions in abundance. The skyscrapers, yellow cabs, Hudson River, Central Park, Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building are just some of reasons why the ‘Big Apple’ is truly special.

Day 19: Cruising Hudson River

Leaving New York’s iconic skyline behind, a sail along the size-restricted Hudson River provides contrasting sights and experiences to those on offer in the ‘Big Apple’. While relaxing on board your smaller ship, walls of towering skyscrapers will turn to low-lying riverbanks laden with tree-smothered state parks and nature reserves. These countryside scenes are particularly breathtaking in the fall season, when the lush foliage turns to vibrant autumn colours of browns, reds and yellows.

Day 20: Cruising Chesapeake & Delaware Canal

En route to Baltimore, sailing the narrow Chesapeake and Delaware Canal makes for a relaxing and rewarding few hours of scenic cruising. Taking advantage of your ship’s smaller dimensions, you’ll pass underneath low bridges that prevent larger vessels for navigating this picturesque route, and admire ever-changing scenes of beautiful countryside and charming, white wooden dwellings rarely seen on North American cruises.

Day 21: Baltimore

Baltimore – the largest city in the state of Maryland – is steeped in history and boasts a diverse range of cultures, imposing skyscrapers, charming historic structures and a number of popular attractions, including the National Aquarium, Walters Art Museum and the Mount Vernon district. Mount Vernon is a National Landmark Historic District and is known as the city’s cultural hub, where Baltimore’s grand 19th century industrialist mansions - now used as museums, galleries, shops and cafes – are found, as well as America’s first Catholic Cathedral, the Washington Monument and the original copy of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’.

Day 22 & 23: At Sea

Day 24: Hamilton, Bermuda

Hamilton, the capital of Bermuda is a small, friendly city with a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere and exciting vibrancy. Front Street, arguably the city’s biggest attraction, runs along the shore line and is usually the first glimpse of Hamilton that visitors get as they arrive. The street is home to glitzy shops and several restaurants and bars, all benefitting from wonderful views out across the harbour.

Day 25 - 29: At Sea

Day 30: Ponta Delgada, Portugal

Ponta Delgada, the main town on the island of São Miguel, is the capital of the Azores archipelago of Portugal. Day 31 & 32: At Sea

Day 33: La Coruña, Spain
