I have just stayed at The Westin for 10 nights on a family ski holiday and we loved it. We found all the staff helpful and friendly from check-in to concierge. The one bedroom suite was excellent, the kitchenette facilities were very useful and it had a great bathroom with separate soaker tub and shower.
It is excellently located for the gondolas and the ski valet, who set up at the bottom of the mountain every day was a lovely touch. The 5 tier chocolate fountain in the main lobby every afternoon was very popular, as was the pool and outdoor hot tub. The size of the pool was a little disappointing, but the spa facilities were good. The treatments are pricey and not the best I've had, but still enjoyable and relaxing after a long day skiing! I did not like their system of adding on a mandatory gratuity - surely a contradiction in terms!
Whistler is an excellent year round destination, fantastic in the winter for skiing, snowmobiling, husky sledding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and in the summer for mountain biking and walking. The ski area in Whistler/Blackcomb is extensive, my husband and sons enjoyed the 11 kilometre Peak to Creek run several times, whilst I meandered through the trees admiring the beautiful scenery. My Japanese ski instructor was fantastic and even had me skiing down a blue run with no poles! The season runs right through to June, with Glacier skiing and this year they've had a record 12 metres of snow. We had a great time snowmobiling on Cougar Mountain just 10 minutes from the village. None of us had done it before but after a 5 minute introduction to the beast we had a blast and it wasn't difficult at all.
Whistler's pedestrianised village is easy to get around and there's a fantastic choice of eateries - do book in the evenings, especially at busy times like Easter holidays. Also bear in mind that the drinking age in Canada is 19 and some establishments do not let minors in after 8pm. This was the case in the Firerock Lounge in The Westin.
Whistler is extremely proud of the fact that it is hosting some of the Winter Olympics 2010, I know they'll make fantastic hosts. I just hope the Sea to Sky roadway improvements from Vancouver are finished in time.
All in all, a great hotel with good facilities, great service and a fantastic location. Highly recommended.
