Al-Qahirah in Arabic, which means ‘The Triumphant’.

The City was founded in 969 AD. It is the administrative capital of Egypt with a population of more than 16 million; almost one-third the country’s total population.

Lively – Cairo is a city that never stops! It is a city of huge contrast between old and modern. A city that offers a full combination of Egyptian history: the pyramids as well as the treasures of the Egyptian museum stand for the Pharaonic period; the suspended church and its famous Coptic-Christian icons; the Saladin citadel which is an example of the most beautiful Islamic architecture and finally the modern touch of the Cairo tower.

The vibrancy of Khan El-Khalili bazaar is something not to be missed, from the essence of the spice shops to the amazing handicrafts. The bazaar is not only a place for shopping but a tour on foot around it offers a real taste of Cairo.

This colonial hotel was built for the opening of the Suez Canal to host all the European kings, queens, and heads of state. You will see the fabulous decoration as soon as you enter the lobby – and the palace section suites are still perfectly maintained.

Missing a drink at the bar with its stunning view of the pyramids is like going to Cairo and not visiting the pyramids! Cairo is where I was born and worked as a tour leader for nine years, so there is no doubt I can tell you absolutely anything about it. My contacts in Cairo will be there to help, my friend, Ahmed Anwar, is one of the best tour guides and works for many of the major tour companies in Egypt.

The hotel is next door to the pyramids. There is one common misconception that the hotel is a long way from Cairo city centre…absolutely wrong - a 25 minute drive will take you there; just remember to ask the taxi driver to take the ring road.

The hotel is luxurious and even its new extension (the garden section) is marvellous. Another luxury aspect - you don’t need to walk all the way from the garden section to the palace for breakfast or a meal, as there is a luxury restaurant sited in the the garden section.
