My 7 Travel Tips for New York City

Aerial view of New York

26th February 2016: I recently celebrated my birthday in fabulous New York City – what better place to do it than in the Big Apple? Here are my top travel tips from my visit…

Views of the City

1. Seeing New York from the Empire State Building in the day time and from Top of the Rock at night, gives you two different perspectives of the city that never sleeps - busy and loud in the day - and busy, loud and fully lit up at night!

2. Take the subway to Brooklyn, walk the Brooklyn Bridge from Brooklyn back towards Manhattan. This saves you time and walking it twice.

Attraction Passes

3. It’s well worth grabbing the offers from the Attraction Passes, for either one or two or more days - you will get stopped by people offering you the passes on your way to the Empire State Building. Pay by cash or card. By using these, you beat the queues to most attractions too, saving you time so you can cram in as many attractions as possible, especially if you take advantage of the one day pass.

4. My advice is head to the Empire State Building as early as possible and take the one day pass if it is all you have time for. It comes with a booklet of the 60+ attractions included in the price. Take time to sit down and study which attractions you want to see, make a note of the time they open and close and looking at a map of New York, see how you can plan and time your day to fit in all the important visits. The one day pass ends at midnight - so you could for example choose to go up to Top of the Rock as its last elevator goes up at 11:00pm.

Broadway Shows

5. A trip to New York isn’t complete without seeing a Broadway show. I went to see Bruce Willis in Stephen King’s Misery and Keira Knightley in Emile Zola’s Therese Raquin. It was great to see such famous actors on stage, all very surreal!

Food

6. Food in New York is fab. I ate at Balthazar, a typical French Brasserie - straight from Paris - gorgeous food and amazing atmosphere.

7. La Bodega Negra, a very trendy Mexican restaurant, part of the Dream Downtown Hotel is well worth a visit. It has really tasty food and amazing desserts.
