Les' Quintessentially Italian Break on Lake Maggiore

les hero

I have just returned from a three night break on Lake Maggiore which at only 45 minutes from Milan airport is perfectly placed to have a short break in an exquisite part of Italy.

Stresa was my base for the stay and lying where it does on the lakeside makes it the perfect base to explore the area and indeed the whole region as it is well connected by rail, road and water taxi.

This is a quiet but beautifully situated town with an idyllic view of the lake and the mountains in every direction. Anyone staying in this area for the first time would be advised to locate themselves in Stresa and take full advantage of its position on the Lakeside. The town is a very manageable size with a central piazza and plenty of narrow cobbled streets bustling with restaurants and souvenir shops.

The restaurants are plentiful and cater for all tastes from set price menus to full a la carte restaurants in lakeside settings. Stresa is a quality quintessential resort in one of Italy's most picturesque regions.

Multiple towns dotted around Lake Maggiore are only a short time away on the many ferries that crisscross the lake. A highlight of any stay in Stresa must be the cable car ride to Mount Motterone. This area in the winter is a small ski resort but year round offers you a spectacular view of the whole lake and mountains of both Italy and Switzerland.

Another suggestion of mine would be a three island tour on the lake, taking in Isola Bella, Isle de Pescatori and Isla Madre. These islands represent the traditions and history of the area as the home of both the local fishing history and the all together more splendorous families who came from Milan to bring wealth and prosperity to this lake.

On the islands you will find 16th century Baroque Palaces and Botanical gardens with World Heritage status. Fisherman’s Island gives you an insight into life for the local population and you will find a charming town of winding streets and stunning views in all directions.

If a typical Italian town is what you are looking for Stresa will charm you and the surrounding area will keep you entertained during your stay.

My Hotels

Villa e Palazzo Aminta

aminta

A 5 star hotel just across the road from the lake this sumptuous hotel is comfort personified and with stunning views from both the rooms and dining rooms you are constantly aware of the outstanding position of this hotel. With just 71 bedrooms it has the feel of a small palace. Beautiful Murano glass chandeliers are to be found throughout the hotel and is typical of the quality offered at every turn during your stay here. The 20 minute stroll to the centre of town is taken by the lakeside path but the hotel offers a shuttle service if you prefer. The spa is uniquely placed in caves under the hotel and is a major attraction of the hotel. My highlight was dining in the hotel with its regional culinary choices and superb wine cellar.

Grand Hotel des Iles Borromes

grand

A much larger palatial hotel and just 10 minutes from the centre of the town this historical landmark in the town is imposing. The distinctive style is displayed throughout the hotel and is reminiscent of another age and time. Beautiful grounds and soon to be refurbished pool area your comfort is guaranteed. The hotel offers a substantial breakfast and dinner in the sumptuous setting of the main dining room. Large rooms of all sizes, and many with lake views make for a very enjoyable base for your stay in Stresa.

Grand Hotel Bristol

bristol

A beautiful hotel with substantial gardens and swimming pool. Imposing communal rooms and stunning conservatory add to this smart hotels many plus points. Minutes from the centre of town by the lakeside path you are perfectly placed for the local ferries.

Rooms are decorated in great style with substantial bathrooms and some of the best lake views from very large balconies. A sauna and fitness centre with an indoor pool are also available. The hotel offers both B&B or half board served in their fine dining room.
