Grenada in the Caribbean

Grenada

I was lucky enough to spend the last week in May on this beautiful Island. Although it was just starting to come into the rainy season, I found the climate ideal, lovely sunny days and cooler nights with the odd shower, which really wasn't a problem.

Grenada is located at the most southerly end of the Winward Islands and I particulary chose this island not just for its beautiful scenery and powder white beaches, but also for its friendliness and the fact that you feel very safe walking around and enjoying the local culture and lovely cuisine on offer at the many local restaurants.

We chose to stay at the Flamboyant Hotel, which is set directly above Grand Anse Beach (one of the best beaches on the island). The Flamboyant is a family-run small hotel which offers different dining options from bed and breakfast to all inclusive. We chose the bed and breakfast option and ate out at one of the many local eateries, which I have to say were very reasonably priced. The rooms were spacious and very clean and the staff extremely friendly. The views from the balcony were quite amazing and a minute's walk took you to the fabulous Grand Anse Beach.

Grenada had lots to offer and its capital, St Georges, is well worth a visit. It has both British colonial and Caribbean buildings that line narrow streets and a very lively and colourful market every Saturday where you can buy the island's famous spices. Higjh up in the mountains you will find the Great Etan National Park as well as hiking trails that run through the tropical rainforests. We also spent a morning snorkelling and went to visit the famous underwater sculptures, which are bolted 22 feet below sea level and were quite amazing.

I had a wonderful time in Grenada and would love to return - it would suit anyone looking for stunning beaches, wonderful hospitality, great Caribbean cuisine and endless great sights to visit.
