Building the World's Largest Cruise Ship

Symphony of the Seas 22nd March 2018: Over the next six years, Royal Caribbean® will launch five new ships starting with their fourth 'Oasis Class' vessel, Symphony of the Seas. Launching this spring, Symphony of the Seas will be the world's largest cruise ship carrying 5,479 passengers with a total of 16 decks. Managing Director, Miles Morgan was invited to see Symphony of the Seas while it was being built in France and shares with us just some of the amazing features we can look forward to on board.

Central Park

With over 12,000 shrubs and trees craned in to adorn Symphony's Central Park as well as the addition of birdsong, it will be hard to believe you're on board a ship when you stroll through this area on board. This airy, open space will offer guests a space to take time away from the hubbub of the on-board pools and arcades and instead take a leisurely stroll amongst the greenery and perhaps a bite to eat at one of the huge range of restaurants here, including Jamie's Italian.

Royal Promenade

Awash with bars, restaurants and filled with luxury shops, Symphony's Royal Promenade will offer guests the ultimate leisure and dining experience. To top it off, Symphony of the Seas, like many of its fellow Oasis Class ships, will include the 'Rising Tides Bar'. The bar will be situated in the middle of the promenade and really does live up to its name in that it will transport guests upwards and downwards from the Royal Promenade to Central Park, the best part? You can have a drink too!

Water Slides and Boardwalk

'The Perfect Storm is a trio of water slides, three decks high, providing the ultimate thrill-seeking experience as you race to the bottom of either the Typhoon or Cyclone slide. Or why not drop into the massive champagne bowl? The choice is yours. The ship's 1950s themed Boardwalk provides guests with an array of leisure activities and restaurants to try during their time on board. A must for anyone cruising on an Oasis Class ship, you’ll be able to enjoy a cupcake from Cups and Scoops, or amuse yourself in the Boardwalk Arcade or get a bite to eat at the American diner Johnny Rocket’s. Perfect for families, while it doesn’t look much now, we can assure you, you’ll be entertained for hours here.

Ice-Skating Rink

As with many other ships in its fleet, Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas will include a large sized ice rink. Not only will the rink provide guests with stunning ice shows, lighting above the rink will also provide guests with stunning visual effects as the skating professionals perform. Guests will also be able to enjoy a skate themselves, all abilities are welcome. >

Casual Dining

As well as the well-known dining experiences on board its fellow Oasis Class ships such as Jamie's Italian, Chops Grille and Sorrento's, Symphony of the Seas will be debuting four more restaurant experiences for guests to enjoy. Hooked Seafood will offer fresh seafood and bar favourites while El Loco Fresh will serve up Mexican favourites like tacos, burritos and churros. Playmakers Sports Bar and Arcade not only provides a fantastic place to watch and catch up with the latest sports games, guests can also play games at the arcade. Finally, for those with a sweeter tooth, Sugar Beach will be jam-packed with sweet treats from classic confectionary to home-made ice cream.

Vitality at Sea Spa

Symphony's on-board spa will include a range of wellbeing treatments and will include 'Elemis' products. There will also be the opportunity for guests to learn more about their health and how to adapt their eating habits for a healthier lifestyle through seminars, classes and fitness demonstrations with fitness professionals. So, whether you want to pamper yourself or simply relax, Symphony of the Seas’ Vitality Spa can help you make the most of your experience on board.

Ultimate Family Suite

With only one available on board and fully booked up for the next year, the Ultimate Family Suite will truly live up to its name. Set across two storeys and joined not only by a staircase but also by a full-sized children's slide, the 1,350 m2 suite has a wrap-around balcony and arguably the best views on ship. The Ultimate Family Suite will sleep up to eight people and include everything from a 3D-cinema room with popcorn machine, in-room slide, Lego wall, air-hockey table and balcony whirlpool. The room will also come with its own 'Royal Genie' a specially trained crew member to help families make the most of their time on board.

Crown Loft Suite

Set across two floors, loft suites on board will provide guests with spacious living areas and will provided the added 'wow' factor for any cruise experience. Double-height windows will ensure guests are provided with some of the most incredible views at sea, while its special privileges including priority check-in and complimentary valet-service mean you'll be looked after during your holiday every step of the way. The Crown Loft Suite is just one of several lofts available on board which all offer guests different facilities. From dining rooms to Jacuzzis and even a baby grand piano, it's definitely worth finding out more about these spaces on board.

Symphony of the Seas and Beyond

Once launched, Symphony of the Seas will be followed by Oasis V which will be Royal Caribbean®'s fifth Oasis-class ship and is yet unnamed. Scheduled to start sailing in 2021 the vessel will be built at Saint Nazaire's shipyard in France. The first ship in Royal Caribbean®'s next class of cruise ship will launch in 2022 and come under the company's 'Icon Class' of ships. Powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) the vessel will use fuel cell technology in a bid to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Final Thoughts

The scale of Symphony of the Seas is truly amazing. While I visited this incredible vessel as the finishing touches were being completed, I'm really looking forward to re-visiting soon to see exactly what the finished product looks like. There's no doubt that Symphony of the Seas is an outstanding ship and is sure to provide holidaymakers with an exciting, innovative and forward-thinking cruise experience. Not only will Symphony of the Seas become the world's largest cruise ship when it takes its maiden voyage at the end of March, it will also be one of the most spectacular.
