5 Things To Do In Sardinia

Sardinia

11th March 2016: After an easy two and a half hour flight from Bristol, I arrived in beautiful Sardinia. Although I only stayed on the island for five nights, I managed to see quite a lot of the North Island. Here are my top things to do in Sardinia…

1. Hire a Car

Due to the size of the island, I’d definitely recommend hiring a car. With such a beautiful scenery and amazing beaches, you can discover more independently. We collected our car from the airport, which was simple and with lovely quiet roads, it was really easy to drive over there. This gave us the opportunity to see more in the short time we were there, being able to stop off at different attractions and beaches along the way, and even take the car on the small ferry to visit another island.

2. Eat Out

Although the Baia Sardina hotel had included breakfast and evening meal, I would still recommend venturing out at least once for a meal. With plenty of villas, hotels, shops, café bars, restaurants and a lively piazza, it’s a great way to mingle with the locals and soak up the overall atmosphere. Even if it’s just having breakfast, enjoy the local cuisine at a very reasonable price, as you gaze out at the turquoise sea.

3. Porto Cervo

Definitely worth a visit is Porto Cervo, located on the northeast coast of Sardinia, in the Gallura region. Created by Prince Karim Aga Khan, at the end of the 1950s, it was once an exclusive retreat for the international jetset. Today it remains one of the most luxurious resorts in the world, full of beautiful yachts and designer shops it’s lovely to wander around and enjoy a coffee as you people watch.

4. Water Sports

With so many beautiful beaches, it’s no wonder there are plenty of water sports and boat trips on offer. Ranging from the challenge of windsurfing and surfing, to something a little simpler like a basic pedaloes and canoes, there’s really something for every ability. Why not enjoy a boat trip to one of the islands and really appreciate the beauty of this coastline.

5. Island of Maddalena

Just a 20-minute ferry ride takes you to the beautiful island of Maddalena. The cluster of rocky islands lies in famously beautiful waters, clear and shimmering with a range of blue and turquoise hues. There are many fine sand beaches here, some of them romantically isolated, and the islands are popular for boating, swimming and sunbathing.

Sardinia has so much to offer, you could stay at least 2 weeks, or if you’re just looking for a flavour, it's an ideal destination for a short break. With direct flights from Bristol Airport, it makes a great break in the sun.
