Visit the historical village of Matjiesfontein. Founded in 1884, Matjiesfontein is a a National Historic Monument that preserves remnants of the Victorian era. In its day, tiny Matjiesfontein was visited by Cecil Rhodes, Lord Randolph Churchill (Winston's father) and other British aristocrats on holiday.
During the Boer-Anglo War, from 1899 to 1902 the headquarters of the Cape's commander-in-chief was located in Matjiesfontein, home to a garrison of 10,000 men. Matjiesfontein's white-washed buildings, the faded elegance of the Lord Milner hotel, and its Transport and Marie Rawdon museums transport visitors to another time and place.
