Porta Nova Hotel
Overview
Porta Nova Hotel, Tavira
Portugal
Star Rating: ****
So exactly what is it that sets this hotel apart from so many others? Is it the stunning location? The Porta Nova Hotel is built on a hillside, overlooking historic Tavira and the sea beyond. It's one of those unique holiday views that you only really get in the Algarve: the historic town spreading out below you, the warm waves of the Mediterranean lapping at the shores of the beach, and the big blue sky, stretching for miles under the warm sun.
Is it the design? The Porta Nova is one of the most beautiful hotels you'll ever stay in. It's all very tasteful, very understated, but beautifully designed and appointed. From the smart lobby, to the stunning bar area, both affording wonderful views out over the town; everything has that chic, contemporary look about it.
And what about the rooms? The same applies. Every room benefits from a balcony, so you can really admire that view at your leisure. Rooms are also equipped with satellite TV, direct dial phone, and optional piped music. Mini bars and safes are also available for a small fee.
Then there are the facilities. The Porta Nova Hotel hasn't just been built to look elegant, it's packed full of amenities; everything you need for an effortless and enjoyable stay. Choose from the excellent outdoor and indoor swimming pools, or head over to the well-equipped Health Club, with Jacuzzi. (Go on, you're on holiday, you deserve it!)
The Porta Nova restaurant offers a wide selection of favourites in a smart, convivial atmosphere and you can precede dinner (or round it off) with a drink in one of the three hotel bars. Do make sure you enjoy a drink at the rooftop bar, where you can really enjoy those wonderful views.
And then there's Tavira itself to explore and enjoy. After gazing out over it from the rooftop bar, you'll want to go and take a closer look. So, set aside some time to explore the attractive town centre. And don't forget your swimming togs - the sea is less than two miles away. You can even take a boat trip to the nearby Tavira Island.
We wondered what set the Porta Nova Hotel apart. Well, we've told you what we think, but hopefully you'll be able to see (and decide) for yourself...

Another destination I love is the Algarve in Southern Portugal. It has a long coastline with several white sandy beaches and coves. I have visited several resorts here. I would recommend visiting the harbour at Vilamoura to sit and watch the sun go down. If you like Golf, this is a great place to visit. With several fantastic lush golf courses, you really are spoilt for choice.
