Full Itinerary

Day 1: UK - Havana

You'll be picked up at from your home today with an included UK door-to-door travel service, and taken to the airport for your flight to Havana. On arrival in Havana, you'll be transferred to your hotel for the next three nights.

Day 2: Havana

Contrast old and new Havana on an included tour and enjoy a Cuban cocktail lesson, and dinner at a local restaurant tonight. Optional evening excursion to the Tropicana Nightclub.

Day 3: Havana

With a day at leisure, you're free to explore Havana at your own pace.

Alternatively, you may wish to join an optional excursion to the tranquil Viñales Valley, where you'll take a boat ride on the subterranean lake.

Day 4: Havana-Holguin-Guardalavaca

Transfer to the airport and take an internal flight to Holguin in the east of the island (one hour and 20 minutes), then transfer to the beach resort of Guardalavaca.

Stay three nights at the 4-star Sol Rio Luna y Mares (4Q). The resort is composed of two adjoining hotels with a beautiful sandy beach just 50 metres away. Facilities include a main buffet-style restaurant, a selection of other restaurants and bars, three freshwater pools, wellness centre (charges apply), sports courts, fitness centre, and live entertainment. Each of the 444 air-conditioned rooms has a television, telephone, safe, mini bar, iron and ironing board and hairdryer.

The rest of they day is free to spend at leisure. B, L, D

Day 5: Guardalavaca

This morning’s included tour visits the archaeological Museo Chorro de Maita, which protects the site of an excavated Indian village and provides some intriguing insights into the life of indigenous Cubans before the coming of Columbus.

Next, visit Boca de Sama School, followed by visit to a small local farm 'Casa de Campesinos'. Spend the afternoon at leisure. B, L, D

Day 6: Guardalavaca

Spend the day at leisure. B, L, D

Day 7: Guardalavaca-Santiago de Cuba

Embark on a tour of Holguin City this morning, then begin your journey south to Santiago de Cuba (119 miles, three hours and 20 minutes).

Pause en route in Biran, the birthplace of Fidel Castro, to see the farm where he grew up. Visit El Cobre Basilica, the only basilica in Cuba. Perched on a hilltop north of Santiago de Cuba, the Spanish-style church was built around the Cobre shine in 1927 after the Pope visited and declared her the patron saint of Cuba.

Stop for photos at Antonio Maceo Revolution Square, before continuing to the 5-star Melia Santiago de Cuba Hotel (4Q), where you’ll stay for three nights. The hotel has outdoor swimming pools and various sports facilities. Your included breakfasts and dinners are served in the hotel’s buffet-style ‘Las Columnas’ restaurant.

For dinner, guests are requested to observe a smart dress code: gentlemen are not permitted to wear shorts or open-toed shoes. Each of the 302 en suite guest rooms has a satellite television, telephone, radio, hairdryer, minibar and a safety deposit box. B, L, D

Day 8: Santiago de Cuba

The hazy Sierra Maestra Mountains provide a scenic backdrop to Cuba’s former capital, Santiago de Cuba.

Known for its lively soul, it was here that Castro kicked off his revolution and where Barcadi’s first rum factory was set up. Enjoy a morning tour of the nation’s second city, including a visit to Moncada Barracks and the Museum of the 26th July, commemorating Castro’s failed attack in 1953.

After lunch at a local restaurant, return to the hotel for an afternoon at leisure. B, L, D

Day 9: Santiago de Cuba

Visit Santa Ifigenia Cemetery this morning, the resting place of notable Cubans including José Martí and Fidel Castro.

Then, enjoy a harbour cruise of Santiago’s bay with lunch included on the small island of Cayo Granma. Santiago de Cuba’s natural harbour has made it an important port for the past five centuries and a cruise on its waters provides a new perspective on Cuba’s second city.

Day 10: Santiago de Cuba-Bayamo-Camaguey

Travel to tranquil Bayamo, credited as the birthplace of Cuban independence and where horse and cart is the favoured mode of transport (87 miles, two hours and 10 minutes). Here, visit a Casa de Trova (community centre) where locals enjoy music and dancing.

After lunch in a local restaurant, continue to Camaguey (131 miles, three hours and 10 minutes). Here, large rain-collecting urns decorate every street corner and the town plan was designed to trap raiding pirates!

Stay overnight at the 2-star Hotel Colon (2Q). This older hotel has an eclectic charm but very small guest rooms, but makes up for its fewer facilities with its warm and friendly welcome. Rooms have air conditioning and a television. B, L, D

Day 11: Camaguey-Cayo Santa Maria

Begin the day with a tour of colourful Camaguey, taking in the Ignacio Agramonte Park, Boulevard Walk, the Church of the Soledad and Workers’ Square.

Later this morning, travel to the island resort of Cayo Santa Maria (186 miles, four hours), one of Cuba’s northern cays, pausing en route for lunch at Rancho Palma in Morón.

Stay two nights at the 5-star Melia Cayo Santa Maria (4Q), on an all inclusive basis. Facilities include six restaurants, six bars, three freshwater pools, direct access to the beach, spa and fitness centre. Rooms are furnished with a flat screen television, hairdryer, minibar and air conditioning. B, L, D

Day 12: Cayo Santa Maria

Spend the day at leisure, making the most of the facilities. B, L, D

Day 13: Camaguey-Trinidad-Sancti Spiritus

Journey to Sancti Spiritus, visiting Trinidad en route (158 miles, five hours). Take a guided tour of the UNESCO-listed city, with lunch included in a local restaurant. Admire the old Spanish colonial town’s elegant architecture and quiet charm and visit the Palace Cantero Museum, with its stylish neo-Classical decoration and dazzling artefacts. There's also a superb view over Trinidad from the top of its tower. Savour the atmosphere of Trinidad in the traditional La Canchanchara Bar, a 17th-century building that is one of the best-known bars in all of Cuba.

Stay overnight at the rural 3-star Rancho Hatuey (2Q). The hotel comprises several accommodation blocks spread throughout the grounds and offers the chance to stay in an authentic, Cuban-style property, where amenities are functional, but may not be of the standard you will have experienced in other hotels. The hotel oozes character and along with the friendliness of the staff and locals you are sure to enjoy your stay here. Each of the 76 air-conditioned chalet-type rooms has views of the gardens and contains a satellite television, a telephone and radio. B, L, D

Day 14: Sancti Spiritus-Santa Clara-Havana

Drive to Santa Clara (60 miles, 90 minutes) to visit the Che Guevara Mausoleum and see an armoured train from the battle for the city that was decisive in the outcome of the Cuban Revolution.

After lunch at a local restaurant, return to Havana (174 miles, three hours).

Return to the 5-star Melia Habana Hotel for an overnight stay. Facilities here include a main restaurant, five alternative restaurants, a bar, outdoor swimming pool, fitness centre and spa (charges apply), gardens and terrace. Each of the 397 air-conditioned rooms have a television, telephone, safe and hairdryer. B, L, D

Day 15: Havana - UK

An optional excursion traces Ernest Hemingway’s life in Cuba.

Travel to the airport for your overnight flight back to the UK. B, L, D

Day 16: UK

This morning you arrive back in the UK, where your door-to-door travel service awaits, to take you home.
